Celiac Disease and Neuropathy

Celiac Disease and Neuropathy

Dr. Howard Sander’s published an article on “The Link Between Celiac Disease and Neuropathy” and was featured on The Neuropathy Associations website before they closed on Dec 31, 2014 and brings attention to the need for some patients presenting with neuropathy and the symptoms of Celiac Disease to be tested.

Howard. W. Sander, M.D. is a professor of Neurology, director of Neuromuscular Medicine, and director of Neurology Residency Program at New York University School of Medicine.

Normally doctors test for celiac disease, but not for gluten sensitivity. One patient noted that they did not have celiac disease, but that once they went on a gluten-free diet, they regained the temperature sense in their feet and the pain levels went from a 10 to a zero!

Some solutions just require patience, some out of the box thinking and knowledge of all the possible causes of neuropathy.

Never allow a doctor to just dismiss you as nothing can be done, until ALL possible causes have been explored and you have been tested for an immune mediated neuropathy. I have found that the book by Dr. Norman Latov, Peripheral Neuropathy: When the Numbness, Pain and Burning Won’t Stop is an excellent resource for patients to find knowledge that may help them lead the doctor to the cause of their neuropathy. Do yourself a favor, buy a copy and read it. Available from www.amazon.com.
